How to Dance Outdoors

Just as it is when you take a dance class in the studio, it is important to be prepared and ready for class. This guide is designed to help you get the most of your outdoor dance class and be sure that all of our dancers are staying safe while enjoying their favorite dance styles.

What to bring: Be prepared!

We encourage all dancers to bring a water bottle, yoga mat and their mask to their outdoor dance classes. If you are sensitive to direct sun you may want to apply and/or bring sunscreen, a hat and/or sunglasses. Bringing a small towel is also a great item to have in your bag when exercising outdoors.

What to wear: You’re still a dancer!

Taking class outside may look and feel a little bit different, but remember it’s still important to dress for class. Be mindful of what feels comfortable, but would also be appropriate to wear to your studio classes. Leggings, running shorts and fitted tops are acceptable. Remember that the instructors need to see the students bodies in order to properly give corrections on alignment and technique. Sneakers are a great option for outside class. Be sure to find a pair that is comfortable for jumping and that will still allow you to have foot and ankle mobility. Students may be asked to remove footwear if they are focusing on footwork and will remain on their yoga mats.

The dance space: It’s all yours!

Parks are a great place for socially distanced dance class. When you arrive, you will be greeted by an AIM staff member and given guidance on proceeding to your dance space. Bring your water bottle and dance bag with you and once you are in your designated dance area which will be marked clearly, you can remove your mask*. Being in a park allows us to have 6+ feet between our dance spaces and students will enjoy being able to move freely and safely.

*Mask removal is subject to change based on municipal laws at the time of class.
