How to Take a Virtual Dance Class

When taking class at the dance studio is not the best option for you, being able to take class virtually via Zoom will allow dancers and instructors to stay connected and productive. In addition, utilizing the AIM video library will allow dancers to add additional material which has been created and selected based on their personal dance goals.

What is Zoom and how do I use it?

Zoom is a video conference tool that utilizes video and audio to connect groups of people. To join your virtual dance class, you will need a phone, tablet or computer and an internet connection. For more information and video tutorials please visit: www.support.zoom.us

Make your dance space safe!

Having a space that is as wide open as possible is important for your safety. Be sure that your space is clear of furniture and that the floor is safe for dancing. For tap class, be sure to have a tap board or piece of plywood so as to not damage your shoes or the flooring. If an outside space is available and safe (ie yard, patio, etc.) this could be a great option. Be sure that the area is clear of sticks, rocks, other debris that could be harmful.

We recommend a 6-8ft wide space for dancing and that the device be placed at least 10ft away so that the teacher can see your entire body while dancing.

Test your internet connection in your space to be sure you will get the most out of your virtual dance class. If you have questions/concerns on how to make your space safe, please reach out to us for suggestions.

How do I log into class?

Log into your account in the Family portal. On the main screen you will see a box listing Today’s Classes. Under the class name, there is a camera icon. Click that, and you will be redirected to zoom for your session. The instructor will let you in from the virtual waiting room.

What if I have a question during class?

At the beginning of class, the instructor will give the class a brief welcome and explanation of what to expect for class. Once class starts, everyone will be muted and the instructor will lead. In between exercises or when there is a natural break in class, the instructor may unmute students and welcome questions. We encourage students to hold questions/comments for these breaks and also refrain from using the chat feature unless for an emergency.

What if I don’t have the space to take class in my home?

We understand that not everyone has large amounts of space in their home. We encourage everyone to join in and participate with whatever space they do have. Even if you only have a couple of open square feet in your bedroom. Instructors are fully aware that space is limited and are working hard to create the same quality of material for everyone to participate in!

Dos and Don’ts for taking class at home:

Do:

Ask for privacy. Asking your family members to respect your class time by being quiet and not interrupting is important.

Dress appropriately. When taking class virtually, it is just as important to get ready and come to class just as you would for in studio dance class. Tip: Set an alarm on your phone 15-20 minutes before class to be sure you have enough time to do your hair and dress for class.

Make sure your devices are charged/plugged in.

Keep your video on. Unless you have previously discussed, your instructor should be able to see you at all times.

Make use of hand signals and non-verbal communication. Get creative and use a “thumbs up/down” to answer questions like, “Should we do that again?”

Don’t:

Be late! Be mindful that technology can be glitchy, so arriving a few minutes early shows the instructor that you’re prepared and ready!

Be scared to ask for help! Whether it’s a technical issue, or something you want to discuss privately with your instructor, we are here to make your dance education a fun and supportive journey. Need help, just ask!
